Akureyri
Iceland
Akureyri is the “Capital of the North” and offers a fantastic mix of both tour options and DIY activities.
Cruises typically dock at the Oddeyrarbryggja pier, which is very convenient: it’s only a 5–10 minute flat walk to the town center and the iconic Hof Cultural Center.
Option 1: Excursion (Highly Recommended for Nature)
Why: The most spectacular sights (Goðafoss, Lake Mývatn, Dettifoss) are inland. While public buses exist, they are infrequent and risky for cruise schedules.
Lake Mývatn & Goðafoss (“Waterfall of the Gods”):
What is it: A stunning volcanic landscape with craters, lava fields, and one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls.
Logistics: Goðafoss is ~45 minutes away; Lake Mývatn is ~1 hour 15 minutes. A “Jewels of the North” tour is the standard and best way to see these efficiently.
Tip: Look for tours that include the Mývatn Nature Baths (the “Blue Lagoon of the North”) if you enjoy thermal soaking.
Whale Watching:
What is it: Eyjafjörður (the fjord you sail into) is one of the best places in the world to see Humpback whales.
Logistics: You can book this through the ship OR simply walk to the small harbor next to the cruise pier where local operators (like Elding or Ambassador) depart. It is often cheaper to book directly at the kiosk on the pier.
Recommendation
First Time Visitor: Book the Lake Mývatn & Goðafoss excursion. The volcanic landscapes (pseudo-craters, bubbling mud pools) are unique to this region.
Relaxed Option: Sleep in, walk to the Forest Lagoon shuttle for a morning soak, then wander the town and walk up to the Botanical Garden in the afternoon.
