Djupivogur
Iceland
Djupivogur is a tiny, peaceful fishing village (population ~400). It is primarily a “Gateway Port” similar to Invergordon, but with a unique twist: the town itself is quirky and charming enough for a relaxed half-day if you don’t want to sit on a bus.
However, the “main event” attractions are hours away.
Option 1: Excursion (The “Big Ticket” Choice)
Why: This port is your best access point for Vatnajökull National Park and the famous glacier lagoons, which are some of the most spectacular sights in Iceland.
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon (Highly Recommended):
What is it: A massive lagoon filled with blue icebergs breaking off a glacier and floating out to sea. You often see seals swimming among the ice. Nearby is “Diamond Beach,” where ice chunks wash up on black sand.
The Trade-off: It is a long drive (approx. 2.5 hours each way). You will spend 5 hours on a bus for 1–2 hours at the site.
Verdict: If you have never seen a glacier lagoon, it is 100% worth the travel time. It is a bucket-list destination.
Hoffell Glacier:
Some tours go here instead. It is closer than Jökulsárlón but less famous.
Recommendation
If you have energy: Book the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon excursion. It is world-class scenery that you cannot see in Reykjavik or Akureyri.
