Isafjordur (pronounced Ee-sah-fyer-dur) is the capital of the Westfjords, a remote and dramatic region. The port setup depends on the number of ships in port that day.
Dock vs. Tender: Most ships, including mid-sized ones like Oceania Marina, can often dock at the main pier. However, if another large ship is already there, you may tender.
Logistics: The pier (or tender drop-off) is effectively in the town. It is a tiny, flat, and very walkable town. You are just a 5-minute walk from the historic center.
Option 1: Excursion (Highly Recommended for Scenery)
Why: The Westfjords are famous for their sheer, vertical table-top mountains and deep fjords. You can’t see the scale of this from the town center alone.
Dynjandi Waterfall (The “Jewel of the Westfjords”):
What is it: A massive, bridal-veil style waterfall that cascades 100 meters down a mountain. It is arguably one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland.
Logistics: It is a drive (approx. 45-60 minutes each way) through a long tunnel and over a mountain pass. The drive itself is spectacular but requires a tour or rental car.
Activity Level: Once there, you can view it from the bottom or hike up a well-maintained path for about 15-20 minutes to get close to the base.
Vigur Island (Puffins & Eider Ducks):
What is it: A tiny island home to thousands of puffins (until mid-August), eider ducks, and the smallest post office in Europe.
Logistics: Requires a boat tour (approx. 30-45 minutes each way). It is idyllic and very different from the rugged mainland.
Note: Since you are visiting in mid-August, check if the puffins are still there; they typically leave around Aug 10-15. Even without them, it is charming.
Recommendation
If you love waterfalls: Book the Dynjandi tour. It is the highlight of the region.
