However, there is a very important logistical detail you need to know about August 12, 2026: The ship will likely leave Grundarfjörður EARLY (around 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM).
The Eclipse Plan
Why leave early? The total eclipse does not happen until 5:46 PM. The ship departs early to reposition itself perfectly in the “path of totality” at sea, ensuring you have the best possible view from the deck (weather permitting) without mountains blocking the horizon.
What this means for you: You have a short port day (approx. 7:00 AM – 1:30 PM). You cannot take a long 8-hour tour of the peninsula. You need to stay local.
Here is how to maximize your short morning in Grundarfjörður.
Option 1: The “Must-Do” (Kirkjufell Mountain)
Why: You are docking right next to the most photographed mountain in Iceland (famous from Game of Thrones). It is stunning and very close.
How to do it on your own:
The “Kirkjufell Express” Shuttle: Often, a local bus runs from the pier to the waterfall car park every 30 minutes. Cost is approx. $15–$20 USD.
Walk (Recommended if fit): It is about 3 miles (4.5 km) round-trip from the tender pier to the classic waterfall viewpoint. It is a flat, paved walk along the road/coast. It takes about 45–60 minutes each way.
Taxi: There are very few taxis in this tiny town. Do not rely on finding one unless you pre-book.

Recommendation
Go see the Mountain (Kirkjufell), then get back on the ship.
08:30 AM: Take a tender ashore.
09:00 AM: Walk (or take the shuttle) to Kirkjufellsfoss. Spend an hour taking photos.
11:30 AM: Walk back to town.
12:30 PM: Have a bowl of seafood soup at Bjargarsteinn Mathús.
1:30 PM: Head back to the tender to ensure you don’t miss the ship.
Crucial Advice for the Eclipse Viewing (On Board):
Dress Warmly: Even in August, standing still on the deck of a moving ship at 6:00 PM near the Arctic Circle will be cold and windy. Wear your parka, hat, and gloves.
Where to stand: Go to the highest open deck (Deck 14/15 on Marina) or the aft (back) of the ship for the least wind.
Glasses: Oceania usually provides eclipse glasses, but bring your own ISO-certified pair just in case.
