Scrabster is similar to Invergordon: it is primarily a Gateway Port.
Scrabster itself is just a ferry terminal and a fishing harbor. There is virtually nothing to do at the pier other than watch the NorthLink ferry load up for Orkney. The nearest actual town is Thurso, which is 2 miles away.
This is a port where booking a tour (or a private taxi) is highly recommended if you want to see the famous sights.
Option 1: Excursion / Private Tour (Recommended)
Why: The “Big Three” sights here are spread out along the coast. Public transport exists but is infrequent, and trying to string these together by public bus is stressful on a cruise schedule.
Castle of Mey:
What is it: The beloved holiday home of the late Queen Mother (Queen Elizabeth II’s mother). It is intimate, charming, and feels like she just stepped out for a walk.
Logistics: It is about a 20-minute drive from the port.
Dunnet Head:
What is it: The actual northernmost point of the British mainland (often confused with John O’Groats). It features a lighthouse and massive cliffs with puffins (if in season).
Why go: It is far more scenic and dramatic than John O’Groats.
John O’Groats:
What is it: The famous “End of the Road” signpost.
Honest Truth: It is a bit of a tourist trap—mostly just a parking lot, a signpost for photos, and some souvenir shops. Most tours stop here briefly for the photo, which is enough.
Option 2: On Your Own (Thurso Only)
If you don’t want to pay for a tour and just want a relaxed local day:
Go to Thurso:
Getting there: Most cruise lines provide a shuttle bus from the pier to Thurso town center. If not, a taxi is ~£10, or it’s a 40-minute walk (not very scenic).
What to do:
Caithness Horizons Museum: An excellent local museum (if open) about the nuclear power history (Dounreay) and Viking heritage.
Thurso Beach: magnificent viewing of the Pentland Firth.
Shopping: It is a functional Scottish town with bakeries (try a “Forfar Bridie” or meat pie) and wool shops.
My Recommendation
Book a Tour (Private or Ship). Scrabster is a long way to travel just to walk around Thurso. The Castle of Mey is the jewel of this area.
Pro Tip: Look for a tour that prioritizes Dunnet Head over John O’Groats. The views at Dunnet Head are spectacular, whereas John O’Groats is just a “tick the box” photo stop.
