Edinburgh (Newhaven) is generally a “Do It Yourself” port, but it requires a bit more planning than Lysekil or Oslo because it is a tender port and located a few miles from the city center.
Option 1: On Your Own (Recommended for City Highlights)
Why: Once you get into the city center, Edinburgh is incredibly walkable and easy to navigate. Public transport from Newhaven is excellent.
Logistics (The “Commute”):
Tender Port: You will take a small tender boat from the ship to Newhaven Harbour. This process can take 30–60 minutes depending on queues.
Getting to City:
Tram (Best Option): The Newhaven tram stop is just a 5-minute walk from where the tender drops you. It runs every 7 minutes and takes you directly to Princes Street (city center) in about 20–25 minutes. It is clean, safe, and easy to use (tap your credit card).
Bus: Lothian Bus #11 or #16 also goes to the center but is slower due to traffic.
Taxi: Taxis will be waiting at the pier. Cost is approx. £15–£20 to the city center.
Edinburgh Castle (The “Must-Do”):
What is it: The historic fortress dominating the skyline.
Crucial Tip: You MUST book tickets in advance online. They frequently sell out days or weeks ahead. Do not just show up expecting to buy a ticket.
The Royal Mile:
What is it: The famous street running downhill from the Castle to the Palace.
Logistics: Walkable. It is lined with shops, St Giles’ Cathedral, and “closes” (narrow alleyways) to explore.
Holyrood Palace:
What is it: The King’s official residence in Scotland.
Logistics: Located at the bottom of the Royal Mile. Easy to combine with the Castle.
Royal Yacht Britannia:
What is it: The former royal yacht of Queen Elizabeth II.
Logistics: It is actually located in Leith, near your port (Newhaven). You can walk there (approx. 20-30 mins) or take a quick taxi/tram from Newhaven before going into the city center if you prioritize it.
Option 2: Cruise Excursion (Only if…)
You should consider a paid excursion if you want to leave the city to see:
St Andrews (Golf): It is difficult to reach quickly on your own (train + bus/taxi takes 2+ hours each way). A cruise tour is the stress-free way to see the Old Course.
Stirling Castle & Loch Lomond: If you want to see the “Highlands” scenery and “Braveheart” history, a tour is necessary as these are too far for a comfortable DIY day trip given the ship’s schedule.
Edinburgh Military Tattoo (August): If your visit coincides with this famous event, buying a package through the cruise line (or well in advance independently) is essential as tickets sell out months ahead.
My Recommendation
Do it on your own if you want to see Edinburgh City.
Take the Tram from Newhaven to Princes Street.
Walk up to Edinburgh Castle (with your pre-booked ticket!).
Walk down the Royal Mile, stopping at St Giles’ Cathedral.
Visit Holyrood Palace or hike up Arthur’s Seat (if you’re fit/active) for amazing views.
Take the Tram back to Newhaven.
